Music Through the Years

Tapes

The evolution of music and the way it was heard has changed dramatically over the years. As a child in the 80s, I remember my dad and I listening to music from his 8-track tapes in his 1981 Trans-AM taking care of his errands. By my time those were considered old as cassette tapes were already introduced. I was born in the era where boomboxes with their "D" batteries where means of portable music. We didnt have internet where we can download music. We had double cassette boomboxes to record each other's tapes or sit by the radio until our favorite song was played so we can hit the record button. Through the years of grade school I had my portable music player, the walkman. A walkman was no mp3 player but believe me, for that time it was the best thing to have.

As I hit highschool, the discman was introduced. With the inroduction of the discman, it became clear technology was on the rise. Still, with internet being rare and downloading music impossible, recording from the radio or recording your friend's tape was our way of downloading. As time progressed, so did music and its attitude. Music artists were using music to express their feelings and freedom of speech. N.W.A was a group, for example, that portrayed police brutality and how they felt about it. The 90s was an era of technological change and social acceptance. Im just proud to be part of it!
